I feel like the comments on the Front Page have been less constructive and much more hateful in the last weeks since the sale. The misogyny, racism, and other bullshit that was filtered more effectively before seems to be afforded a lot more leeway now.
I would really hate it if it ended up like NPR, which shut down their comment section entirely because the trolls had won. I’d equally hate if if Jalopnik became Reddit because you can say whatever the f**k you want because of “freedom”, or whatever.
There has been zero transparency about how discussion on former GM sites will be managed (as opposed to the prior system).

Am I crazy?
Possibly, but that could be true regardless of the comments.
I don’t really engage much in the comments unless I feel I have something meaningful to add or have something I think is really funny - generally turns out I was wrong.

Honestly, I’m not digging through the comments on there like I used to, so I can’t say. I used to really sort through the comments to find any gems, but I don’t now except on articles that I have a specific interest in (truck yeah for example)

Honestly there seems to be a trend to increasing negativity across everything. Movie reviews and comments, car news and reveals, people offering advice or sharing life experiences. It’s as if everyone is finding common grounds through attacking others. This has always been a thing but this year has been especially toxic for some reason and is so universal that it must be a societal change.

Considering the quality of the FP has been falling, it’s not that surprising that the comments followed suit.

I mean - I just want to live my day without navigating around the opinions of assholes. Is that too much to ask?

That’s a good strategy.

Maybe it’s the Gawker overflow finding a new home? I’ve also noticed it since the beginning of the year.

HEY I JUST GOT UNGRAYED WHAT’RE YOU TRYING TO SAY!!
Kidding. But I have noticed that. It was never warm and cuddly but it's much less friendly now.

Welcome to the ungreys! I dunno, I just feel a different tone - maybe it’s confirmation bias, but I’ve been insulted personally twice today for pretty innocuous comments, and that’s rarely happened even in the last year.

Yup - I feel like I’ve been called f**kwit and c**t for pretty mild criticisms recently. Whatever happened to to “Don’t be a dick”?

Sometimes! Many of the best interactions I’ve had online were on the FP.

The whole thing was kind of odd. I’ve been grey on there for years, took a 4 week hiatus from Oppo and suddenly I’m followed by every Jalopnik sub group. I’d recently stopped even trying to comment anywhere but Black Flag because some of the folks were so rude lately - I was shocked at the behavior of some approved commenters.

I don’t think it’s the policing of the comments, they never really did that. I think it’s overflow from other sites when an article gets shared, particularly deadspin, which is apparently where the gawker homeless wound up.
